You're probably right. But her interrupting his attempt to confess, and then saying let's always be friends. Pretty much made him feel like he got F-bombed. Prior to this event they'd showed him as a very happy energetic kid. Now in high school he's portrayed as a shut in with self esteem issues. Hey looks at Shiori more as a safe bet female to be around because they are childhood friends.
